More Images from the Clarkfiled Photo Shoot

Posted in Event, Landscape, Project, Rural on April 25, 2012 by dynolights

Here are a few of my images from the Clarksville, MN photo shoot.  This location is full of wonderful old vintage objects that beg for creative photography.  It was fun trying various creative techniques on the great subject matter there.  The “Other House” mentioned is a house down the street that is falling apart.  It is on the property, but it has no address so it’s “The Other House.”

The Oliver 2255
This image was processed with Antique Plate 2 in Silver Efex Pro 2 with a layer of color painted back in to give it a vintage look and to block out the boring sky behind it.

Motor Parts Still Life
This found still life was processed in Photoshop by decreasing saturation.

Kitchen “Other House”
This HDR image is a view from the window with the camera situated on the sill. Three exposures were combined in Photomatix.

Shed by “Other House”
This image was processed with “Antique Plate 2″ in Silver Efex Pro 2  with the center selectively removed to show the light spring leaves on the trees contrasting with the dark shed.  The green farm machinery on the right adds a little balance to the composition.

Vintage Cars in Field
Converted to black and white in Photoshop.  Greens were lightened  to give a somewhat infrared look and a slight diffusion was added to the grassy areas.

One of the unique features of this farm is that there is a lot of old equipment and cars laying about the property. It was quite a lot of fun to poke about looking for “treasures” and trying to capture some images that showed off his hidden treasures in an artistic way.

I captured a number of images using both a regular digital camera and one converted to take infrared pictures. I think I liked the way the infrared images turned out better than the standard ones.

I have been experimenting with a few new techniques. For the color photos I would convert to B&W using Silver Efex II and then paint some color back into the picture. For the infrared images I would use HDR processing that tended to put some false color into image and then worked with Silver Efex II to gain the end result that I liked.

A number of our members traveled out to lovely Clarksville due West of Minneapolis, Minnesota to a large farm owned by a relative of one of our members.  The farm’s main attraction for photography is a large collection of old Ford automobiles spread out over the property.   But there were also a lot of other subjects that made it ripe for a photo session.  Below are some of the images of the farm and its environs:

Some of the many old Ford Autos

Some of the locals watching the action

Lots of old antiques to shoot

Firefighters Hall and Museum

Posted in Firefighters, Historical, Minneapolis on March 1, 2012 by dynolights
Members Larry Grace and John Olson recently visited a firefighters museum that many people probably don’t realize is right in Northeast Minneapolis.  It is called the Bill and Bonnie Daniels Firefighters Hall and Museum and it’s located at 664 22nd Ave NE, about midway between University and Central Avenues.
The Firefighters Hall and Museum was made possible by a generous gift from retired Minneapolis Fire Captain Bill Daniels and his wife Bonnie, many private donations, and thousands of hours of volunteer time. Volunteers continue to donate their time to ensure these critical historical artifacts are not lost.
The Museum showcases and preserves a significant part of firefighting history.  It contains a variety of vehicles, equipment, literature, and photographs related to firefighting and firefighters. Some of the items on permanent display are an 1894 steam fire engine, a 1919 American LaFrance ladder truck from Mankato, and a 1932 FWD pumper built by the Minneapolis Fire Department shop. There is also an established and rotating display of area fire collector vehicles.
The exhibits that the museum is most proud of are the ones built for the museums youngest visitors. There is a real fire pole to slide down and till trucks for the kids to drive! Together with other hands-on exhibits, Kids can experience what is like to be a real firefighter.
There is also an extensive library available for research on the subject of firefighting. It contains information on former Minneapolis and St. Paul firefighters and historical items dating back as far as the 1860s, as well as, an extensive collection of firefighting literature.

New Kittens

Posted in Animal Life, Kittens on February 18, 2012 by dynolights

About a year and a half ago my kids found two darling little kittens in the shed at their grandmothers house.  They were in ill-health, and had been neglected or abandoned by their mother.  They were so small and adorable we took them in and nursed them back to health.  Apparently we brought them back a little too far as one is now 18 pounds and the other over 16 pounds!

One thing I regret was not having taken a lot of pictures of them when they were tiny little kittens because they were so cute and adorable.  However, I did get a second chance this past month when the kids grandmother called and said she found two more kittens in the same place.  The new ones were even smaller than the first two.  We are in the process of nursing these back to health.  We plan to put these new ones on some type of weight control as they get older.

Below are some images of the first one a grey tiger striped kitten.  I am processing images of the second kitten.  Its black color makes him much harder to photograph.
